Library Classification :


Library classification is an important and crucial aspect in Library and Information Science. It is distinct from scientific classification in that it has as its goal to provide a useful ordering of documents rather than a theoretical organization of knowledge. Although it has the practical purpose of creating a physical ordering of documents, it does generally attempt to adhere to accepted scientific knowledge.Library classification helps to accommodate all the newly published literature in an already created order of arrangement in a filial sequence.


Textbook Defination :

Library classification, also known as bibliographic classification, is the process of organizing and grouping library materials according to their subject matter, characteristics, or other relevant criteria. It aims to create a logical and structured arrangement that facilitates the retrieval and discovery of information. 


Encycnlopedia Defination : A library classification is a system of coding and organizing library materials (books, serials, audiovisual materials, computer files, maps, realia) according to their subject and allocating a call number to that information resource. Similar to classification systems used in biology, bibliographic classification systems group entities that are similar together typically arranged in a hierarchical tree structure (assuming none-faceted system).


Dictionary Defination : Library classification is a system of the organization of library resources. The following two classification systems are widely used all over the globe; Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and Library of Congress (LC) classification system for organizing a library collection.

      Library classification is the system of arrangement of knowledge from library resources. There are various library classification systems in use (for example Dewey Decimal classification System, Universal Decimal System) to order and arrange the library materials.




Conclution : Library classification is a vital aspect of library science, providing a systematic framework for organizing and accessing information within library collections. Whether using schemes like Dewey Decimal Classification or Library of Congress Classification, the goal is to enhance discoverability and streamline the retrieval of resources. A solid understanding of classification principles is crucial for librarians and information professionals to effectively manage and serve the diverse needs of library users.
