Library  Classification Overview



  • Definition - Library classification can be defined as the arrangement of books on shelves, or description of them, in the manner which is most useful to those who read with the ultimate aim of grouping similar things together. Library classification is meant to achieve these four purposes: ordering the fields of knowledge in a systematic way, bring related items together in the most helpful sequence, provide orderly access on the shelf, and provide a location for an item on the shelf. 


  • Textbook 

Classification was initially described as a mental process of ordering the universe and we have taken our library practice and reduced it to a mere act of sorting & locating documents in a collection of materials. On one hand we can speak of classification in the highest sense- that which hierarchially order the universe-allowing us to proceed from concept experience to concept experience,revising our categories, to building up our knowledge as a consistent attempted representation of the universal order.   • Encyclopedia

  • Dictionary

A system of arranging books, tapes, magazines, etc. in a library into groups according to their subject.(Source-Oxford Learners Dictionaries -Online) 


Conclusion -Classification systems in libraries generally play two roles. Firstly, they facilitate subject access by allowing the user to find out what works or documents the library has on a certain subject. Secondly, they provide a known location for the information source to be located.
